Despite its great height, Hyperion is not the largest known coast redwood; that distinction belongs to the Lost Monarch tree.
Hyperion was discovered August 25, 2006 by naturalists Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor. The tree was verified as standing 115.55 m (379.1 ft) tall by Stephen Sillett. The tree was found in a remote area of the Redwood National Park purchased in 1978, during the Carter Administration. The exact location of the tree has not been revealed to the public for fear that human traffic would upset the ecosystem the tree inhabits. Julius Koch (1872 in Reutlingen, Germany – March 30, 1902, in Mons, Belgium), also known as Le Geant Constantin, was one of twelve people in medical history who have surpassed eight feet in height. He was a victim of the malady eunuchoidal-infantile gigantism (daddy-longlegs syndrome). His height, 245.9 centimeters, (8 feet, 0.8 inches) was estimated, as his legs were amputated after they developed gangrene. He was probably never the world’s tallest person due to his life coinciding with that of John Rogan, who likewise suffered from gigantism. The 2010 edition of Guinness Book of World Records lists Sultan Kosen (born 10 December 1982) as the tallest living man as well as having the largest hands (11.22 inches, 28.5 centimeters) and largest feet (14.4 inches, 36.5 centimeters) when last measured on 8 February 2011. Robert Pershing Wadlow (February 22, 1918 – July 15, 1940) was a man who, to this day, is the tallest person in medical history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. He is often known as the “Alton Giant” because of his Alton, Illinois hometown. Robert Wadlow reached 8 feet 11.1 inches (272 cm) in height and weighed 490 pounds (220 kg) at his death.
